Lactancia materna como un derecho del niño a la vida

RESUMEN

Se realizó un estudio descriptivo y transversal en el Hospital Provincial Pediátrico “Pedro A. Pérez” del municipio de Guantánamo para determinar los beneficios recibidos por los niños ingresados en dicha institución, que habían sido alimentados con leche materna exclusiva durante los primeros 6 meses de edad. Entre otros resultados sobresalieron que el consejo médico fue el factor más influyente en el mantenimiento de la lactancia materna (37, 5 %), que las causas de abandono del amamantamiento fueron predominantemente atribuibles a problemas presentados por las madres (53,2 %) y que el nivel de conocimiento de las progenitoras sobre las ventajas de la alimentación al pecho fue bueno en apenas 15,6 % de ellas.

Breast feeding as a right of the child to life

abstract

A descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out at "Pedro A. Pérez" Provincial Children Hospital from Guantánamo municipality to determine the benefits for children admitted to this institution who had been exclusively fed with breast milk during the first 6 months of age. Among other results it was evident that medical advice was the most influential factor in maintaining breast feeding (37,5%), the causes of stopping nursing were mainly attributable to mothers' problems (53,2%), and the level of the progenitors' knowledge of advantages of breast feeding was good scarcely in 15,6% of them.
