A teaching intervention on oral health in 26 elderly from the "Clodomira Ferrals" Home for the aged in San Luis municipality , from Santiago de Cuba was carried out, during the period January-June, 2005, in order to modify their knowledge in this respect, by providing them, increasing them or rectifying them with general and specific community actions, directed to change concepts and inadequate lifestyles by means of meetings that allowed the interaction with the institutionalized elderly and identification of the existent sanitary problems, in particular related to the dental science care. The study revealed that most of the elderly had mistaken notions on the evaluated items (oral hygiene, use and maintenance of dentures and others) or in many cases they ignored them, so the developed teaching activity was opportune and effective, which indicates that this mechanism to exchange knowledge contributes to excellent results and justifies the recommendation to extend the experience to other homes for the aged and seniors citizens club of the province.
