Se efectuó un estudio de casos y controles en el Hospital Materno Norte
Docente “Tamara Bunke” de Santiago de Cuba, desde enero
del 2004 hasta igual mes del 2005, para determinar la asociación de enfermedad periodontal con partos pretérmino
y nacimiento de niños con bajo peso. El primer
grupo estuvo constituido por 100 gestantes que parieron antes del término y
tuvieron recién nacidos con bajo peso;
el segundo, por 200 embarazadas cuya
gravidez llegó al término y sus hijos presentaron peso
normal. Se les realizó el examen periodontal y se obtuvo
que excepto en las edades extremas, las restantes
variables analizadas devinieron factores de riesgo, fundamentalmente las
infecciones genitourinarias, la enfermedad periodontal
y el tabaquismo. Se recomendó ejecutar
una intervención comunitaria e incorporar el cuidado periodontal
al programa maternoinfantil.

abstract
A case-control study in the "Tamara Bunke" Northern Teaching Maternity Hospital of Santiago de Cuba, from January, 2004 to January, 2005, was carried out to determine the association of periodontal disease with preterm deliveries and children with low birth weight. The first group consisted of 100 pregnant women with preterm births and children with low birth weight; the second group was formed by 200 pregnant women with term deliveries and normal weight children. They were examined periodontally, and except for the extreme ages the remaining analyzed variables were risk factors, mainly genitourinary infections, periodontal disease and smoking habit. It was recommended to perform a community intervention and to include periodontal care in the mother-child program.
