Se realizó un estudio descriptivo
y transversal de 100 pacientes atendidos en el Cuerpo de Guardia de
Oftalmología del Hospital Provincial “Saturnino Lora” de Santiago de Cuba,
desde enero del 2005 hasta igual mes del 2006, a causa de lesiones oculares por la planta conocida
popularmente como atajo negro y
científicamente como Caesalpinia sepiaria, la cual contiene una
sustancia enzimática con acción corrosiva.
Las lesiones tratadas en dicha institución hospitalaria oscilaron entre
muy leves y muy graves, pero la evolución satisfactoria en la mayoría de los
casos dependió de la llegada precoz al local de urgencias, pues aquellos pocos
que acudieron tardíamente quedaron con secuelas corneales, no eliminadas a
pesar del tratamiento prescrito.

A descriptive and cross-sectional study of 100 patients who attended the Ophthalmology emergency room of the "Saturnino Lora" Provincial Hospital in Santiago de Cuba was carried out, from January, 2005 to January, 2006, due to ocular lesions by the plant popularly known as mysore thorn, and scientifically known as Caesalpinia sepiaria, which contains an enzymatic substance with corrosive action. The lesions treated in this hospital institution ranged between very mild and very severe, but the satisfactory course in most of the cases depended on the early arrival at the emergency unit, because those few ones that went late were with corneal sequels that could not be eliminated in spite of the treatment prescribed.
