La otitis externa maligna del
diabético fue descrita por Meltzer y Keleman en 1959 y desde entonces ha sido
denominada de muy diversas maneras. Se observa fundamentalmente en diabéticos,
ancianos, ateroscleróticos, portadores
del virus de la inmunodeficiencia humana, del síndrome de inmunodeficiecia
adquirida y otros. Se trata de una grave infección del conducto auditivo
externo, generalmente producida por Pseudomonas
aeruginosa, que provoca una osteomielitis de la base del cráneo y puede
conducir a la muerte. En esta
comunicación breve, además de mencionar los diferentes nombres que ha recibido,
se acentúa la contribución de Chandler al estudio de la afección, por lo cual
se propone identificarla como enfermedad de Chandler.

The diabetic's malignant external otitis was described by Meltzer and Keleman in 1959 and from then on it has been named in very diverse ways. It is observed mainly in diabetic persons, in the elderly, atherosclerotic patients, HIV carriers, AIDS carriers and others. It is a serious infection of the external auditive duct, generally developed by Pseudomonas aeruginosa that causes an osteomyelitis of the skull base and it can lead to death. In this brief communication, besides mentioning the different names that it has received, Chandler's contribution to the study of the condition is emphasized, that is why its identification as Chandler's disease is proposed.
